The Three Gorges, the most spectacular section of the Yangtze River, are filled with breathtaking sceneries. With Baidi City, Fengjie in Chongqing Municipality to the west end and Nanjin Pass of Yichang in the Hubei province at the east, the Three Gorges, Qutang, Wu and Xiling, total 192 km in length. The Qutang Gorge, known for its magnificence, is only 8 km long. Wu Gorge, 44 km long, is famed for its deep valley and quiet beauty. Among the twelve peaks, the Goddess Peak is the most exquisite. Xiling Gorge, extending 66 km in length and full of turbulent currents and whirlpools, is one of the most dangerous shoals.
Along the Three Gorges, there are broad valleys, where the climate is mild and the soil fertile. These valleys are the main cultivated areas in the Three Gorges, where the county towns of Wushan, Badong and Zigui are located. In the autumn when the orange ripens, its sweet fragrance drifts to the boats on the river.
Qutang Gorge runs eight kilometers from Baidicheng in Fengjie County in the west to Daxizhen in Wushan County, Chongqng City. The shortest among the Three Gorges, it is the most spectacular. As soon as the roaring Yangtze River rushes into the Gorges, it meets head-on with the imposing Kuimen Gate. Rocky mountains rise perpendicularly like walls on both sides of the river squeezing the broad river into a narrow ribbon threading its way in the Gorges.
When the river flows out of Qutang Gorge and passes the broad valley of the Daning River, it enters the scenic Wu Gorge. WuGorges is 45 kilometers long, extending west to east from the mouth of the Danning River in Wushan County to Guandukou in Badong County, Hubei Province. Wushan, Badong and Zigui are famous towns in the Gorges. There are many famous historic sites too..
The longest among the Yangtze three Gorges, Xiling Gorge stretches west to east for 76 kilometers from the mouth of the Xiangxi River at Zigui in Hubei Province to Nanjing Pass near the city of Yichang in Hubei. It is divided into two sections -- the west section consists of the Military Book and Sword Gorges, the Bull's Liver and Horse's Lung Gorges and Kongling Play Gorges, while the east section features the Shadow Play Gorges and the Yellow Cat Gorges.
